Loose or leaning tops rebuilt in matching brick, with corbels and details put back the way they were.

Northeast LA is built on hills. Spanish cottages and Craftsman homes from the 1920s cling to slopes in Mount Washington and Glassell Park, and the modernist houses of Silver Lake and Los Feliz have long Roman-brick fireplaces. Many chimneys here were patched in a hurry after the 1994 Northridge earthquake and never braced properly. Verdugo Hills Chimney & Masonry works from San Fernando Road by the LA River, carries materials up the stairs when needed, and keeps a dispatcher on the phone 24/7.

Left of the gold divider is how the chimney looked when we arrived; right is how we left it. Drag it, or tab onto it and nudge with your keyboard.

Someone had mortared over the cracks years ago, and the chimney kept moving underneath. We took it down to the roof, rebuilt it with steel and strapped it to the rafters.

Shaded by mature trees, this chimney was soft, stained and leaking. The owners re-roofed and we relaid it in fresh brick, topped it with stainless and stepped new metal into the shingles.
Many houses sit up public stairways or long private steps. We bring brick, mortar and tools up by hand and leave the path clean.
When the chimney sits on the low side of a stilt house, we set scaffolding that's safe on the slope.
Smaller trucks fit tight hillside streets, and we plan around neighbors' driveways.
Old brick and rubble are bagged and hauled down, nothing left on the slope.

Mid-century houses often have fireplace walls in long, thin Roman brick, cantilevered hearths and slim flues. Repairs need the right brick and a light hand so the design stays intact.
Roman, Norman or slump block matched in length, color and texture, sometimes salvaged.
Raked horizontals and flush verticals copied exactly, so the long lines stay.
Cracked or sagging cantilevered hearths re-supported and resurfaced.
Liners and dampers upgraded inside without changing what you see.
Call us. A dispatcher answers at all hours and can send a crew for a chimney cracked by a tremor, brick dropping toward a stairway or rain pouring in around the stack. If there's smoke inside, a gas smell or a carbon monoxide alarm, leave first and call 911.
Not always. Many post-1994 repairs were surface patches with no steel or bracing. An inspection shows whether yours was done right.
Steel straps or a brace that tie the chimney to the roof framing, so it's less likely to topple in a quake. It's an affordable upgrade for older brick chimneys.
Yes. We carry everything up stairs and paths by hand, and set safe scaffolding on slopes.
Usually, yes. We source Roman and Norman brick close to the original, and sometimes find salvaged units.
Yes. Stainless caps with spark-arrestor mesh are standard on our hillside jobs near brush.

Brick chimneys were among the most common casualties of the 1994 Northridge quake. In older LA homes the part above the roof often has nothing tying it to the structure.
Straps anchored into the rafters or ceiling joists help keep the stack in place.
Cracks filled with mortar decades ago can hide a broken stack. We open it up and fix it properly.
Where the upper stack is unsound, we rebuild it with vertical reinforcement and anchors.
We pull City of LA building permits for rebuilds and schedule the inspections.
